The Wood Structure for the Prayer Wheel: Sacred Architecture and Traditional Carpentry<\/p>\n

Despite the less-than-pleasant winter weather, the artisans were able to complete the prayer wheel pavilion. Only the benches and the floor need to be finished.
A prayer wheel, especially one of this size, is no ordinary creation. Therefore, this place intended for meditation and wishing prayers required fitting surroundings. We called on the nearby collective Copeaux Cabana<\/a> to help us. They are a group of artisans specializing in various types of work (carpentry, stone-cutting, decorative ironwork) who came together around the common value of traditional building methods in order to preserve and share their knowledge of vernacular architecture. Brunelle, Austin, et Yohann began by shaping the wood in their workshop. Then, they came to mount the final structure. Lastly, Matthieu, the roofer, put the last touch on\u2014a roof of handmade terra cotta tiles.<\/p>\n

We would like to share with you our meeting with a woman of wood: Brunelle, carpenter and the architect for this project.<\/p>\n

Dhagpo <\/strong><\/em>: Can you say a few words about the philosophy of your work?<\/p>\n

Brunelle <\/strong>: We work in traditional carpentry. That means that the techniques themselves haven\u2019t changed much from what carpenters did two hundred years ago. What has evolved somewhat are the tools we use, which are semi-modern and semi-traditional. What we do differs greatly from very modern wood construction with screws, etc. In terms of technique, we work with wood that has barely been treated. We retain the natural curves, and we follow the grain of the wood. We don\u2019t have to make straight lines. That is the particularity of our wood structures; they can have curves, and that\u2019s exactly what we\u2019re looking for. Mechanically, it\u2019s much more solid, and esthetically, it\u2019s much more beautiful! As the individual pieces of wood are not all even, we use techniques like stitching with iron wire to deal with them. Furthermore, each joint is hand-traced. This is not the case in conventional carpentry with perfect, even timbers, where a protractor is employed. We can\u2019t use a protractor. This is a technique specific to traditional carpentry.<\/p>\n

Dhagpo<\/strong><\/em>: Do you have a particular philosophy concerning how forests are treated?<\/p>\n

Brunelle<\/strong><\/em>: We would like to work with an ultra-local supply chain, from the forest management to the loggers to delivery to ourselves\u2014for things to be close by and for there to be respect for the environment. Today, this has disappeared, and we have to rebuild the industry, which is complicated, so we do what we can.
For this project, the wood came from two different sites: one in Corr\u00e8ze, and hour from here that practices sustainable forest-management with a qualitative approach. Unfortunately, they don\u2019t produce enough for the amount we needed. Another part came from this region, twenty minutes from Dhagpo.
We\u2019re exploring a third possibility, that of taking care of the forestry and logging ourselves, which would be ideal. However, this requires bringing together several crafts and professions. We\u2019re working on creating this network.<\/p>\n

Brunelle<\/strong><\/em>: I specialize in sacred architecture. I learned symbolic geometry, working with a compass, etc. So, it\u2019s been my dream to construct a building with a sacred vocation\u2014regardless of the type of spirituality\u2014because I feel that this is the pinnacle of what a space can allow. Thanks to shapes and proportions, it is possible to elevate the energy of a space, and that\u2019s something I secretly cultivate. Each time I sketch a wood structure, I draw it with this awareness.<\/p>\n

Dhagpo<\/strong><\/em>: How did you develop the structure for the prayer wheel?<\/p>\n

Brunelle<\/strong><\/em>: On a concrete level, I started with the sides\u2014the height and width that I needed to respect\u2014and then, based on this, I tried to push the proportions as much as I could in the drawing. I found it interesting to start with a square base, which is very balanced. My work was to incorporate a circle into this base. The square often symbolizes earth, and the circle represents the cosmos. That\u2019s why we suggested doing radiating beams (the flat carpentry above the wheel). Technically speaking, we could have done something simpler or with perpendicular timbers, but the idea of doing radiating was to creating a circle within the square. Because it is a prayer wheel that turns, this creates movement within the wood structure. The rafters, which are also radiant, are likewise intended to bring circular movement inside the square base. It was a lot harder to build, but for me it was a question of energy.<\/p>\n

Another constraint I had to work with was created by the architects from B\u00e2timents de France [because Dhagpo is in a protected area], that the exterior of the pavilion had to be Perigordin in style. My wish was for the inner architecture to evoke Asia, where Buddhism originated. In Asia, constructions are erected via stacking. Instead of assembling elements on a single level, like we do in the West, in the East, layers are stacked on top of each other. We tried to preserve that in this structure\u2014to create several layers to give a slightly more Asian touch.<\/p>\n

Brunelle<\/strong><\/em>: It was the bouquet of seasonal flowers that gets nailed to the structure when it is finished. The tradition is to celebrate the completion of raising the frame. The roofer, who does his work after, cuts it, but he leaves the stem and the nail; that\u2019s the tradition. Personally, it\u2019s not so much the tradition that speaks to me but the idea of celebration, of ritualizing a moment of completion. It is a shared moment for everyone present. Raising a structure is always a beautiful moment. Since it\u2019s still winter, a cedar branch replaced the flowers!<\/p>\n

A pesar de la poca clemencia del tiempo invernal, los artesanos han logrado terminar el pabell\u00f3n del molino de oraciones. Tan solo quedan por finalizar los bancos y el suelo.<\/p>

Un molino de oraciones (\u00a1y de este tama\u00f1o!), no es un edificio trivial, de ah\u00ed la necesidad para este lugar propicio para la contemplaci\u00f3n y para realizar deseos, que el entorno fuera el adecuado. Para ello recurrimos al colectivo Copeaux Cabana<\/a>, muy cerca de Dhagpo. Se trata de una agrupaci\u00f3n de artesanos con diferentes oficios (carpinter\u00eda, estructura, talla de piedra, herrer\u00eda art\u00edstica) que se han reunido en torno a construcciones antiguas y tradicionales, con el fin de preservar y difundir sus conocimientos nativos. Brunelle, Austin et Yohann tallaron la madera en su taller, tras lo cual, vinieron a hacer el montaje final de la carpinter\u00eda antes de que Matthieu, el techador, le diera el toque final recubriendo el tejado de tejas fabricadas a mano.<\/p>

Brunelle\u00a0<\/strong>: Estamos trabajando en carpinter\u00eda tradicional. Esto significa que las t\u00e9cnicas puras no han evolucionado realmente en relaci\u00f3n a la carpinter\u00eda que se hac\u00eda hace doscientos a\u00f1os. Lo que ha evolucionado han sido las herramientas que utilizamos, que son medio modernas y medio antiguas. Por lo tanto, nos diferenciamos mucho de la construcci\u00f3n de estructuras de madera modernas con tornillos, etc. En cuanto a las t\u00e9cnicas, trabajamos con maderas poco trabajadas. De hecho, mantenemos las curvas naturales, seguimos la veta de la madera. No estamos obligados a tener que hacer una l\u00ednea recta siendo esta la particularidad de nuestras estructuras, que pueden tener curvas porque eso es precisamente lo que estamos buscando. \u00a1Es mec\u00e1nicamente mucho m\u00e1s s\u00f3lida y, est\u00e9ticamente, mucho m\u00e1s hermosa! Al estar las maderas desniveladas, es necesario utilizar t\u00e9cnicas de perforaci\u00f3n, plomada, etc., para tratarlas. Adem\u00e1s, cada montaje se realiza a medida, lo que no ocurre en la carpinter\u00eda convencional de maderas perfectas y calibradas donde se utiliza la escuadra. Nosotros no podemos usar una escuadra. Esta es una t\u00e9cnica espec\u00edfica de la carpinter\u00eda tradicional.<\/p>

Brunelle\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>: Nos gustar\u00eda trabajar con una red ultra local, desde el gerente hasta el le\u00f1ador y nosotros y que haya proximidad y respeto por el medio ambiente. Todo esto ha desaparecido, por lo que hay que recrear las redes, es complicado, as\u00ed que hacemos lo que podemos.
Para este proyecto, la madera proviene de dos lugares diferentes: un negocio en Corr\u00e8ze, a una hora de aqu\u00ed, resultado de una gesti\u00f3n forestal sostenible, con un enfoque cualitativo. Desafortunadamente, su rendimiento no es suficiente para la cantidad que necesitamos; otra parte viene de la regi\u00f3n, a veinte minutos de Dhagpo.
Estamos explorando una tercera posibilidad que ser\u00eda explotar los bosques nosotros mismos, lo que ser\u00eda ideal, pero hay que juntar varios gremios, as\u00ed que estamos en el proceso de construir esta red.<\/p>

Brunelle<\/strong><\/em> : Muy concretamente, comenc\u00e9 con las cotas (altura y anchura) que ten\u00eda que respetar, luego, sobre esta base, trat\u00e9 de desarrollar al m\u00e1ximo la proporci\u00f3n en el dibujo. Me pareci\u00f3 interesante empezar con una base cuadrada, que es muy equilibrada. Mi trabajo ha consistido en incorporar el c\u00edrculo a esta base. El cuadrado a menudo simboliza la tierra y el c\u00edrculo, el cosmos. Es por eso que propusimos un enrayado radiante (la estructura plana sobre el molino). T\u00e9cnicamente, podr\u00edamos haber hecho algo m\u00e1s simple o con vigas perpendiculares, pero la idea de hacerlo radiante permiti\u00f3 crear un c\u00edrculo dentro del cuadrado. Dado que es un molino de oraci\u00f3n que gira, esto creaba este mismo movimiento en la estructura. Las vigas, que tambi\u00e9n son radiantes, pretenden igualmente traer un movimiento circular dentro de la base cuadrada, que fue mucho m\u00e1s complejo de lograr, pero para m\u00ed fue m\u00e1s un tema en\u00e9rgico.\u00a0<\/p>

Otra limitaci\u00f3n con la que tuve que lidiar fue con la impuesta por los arquitectos de B\u00e2timents de France (Nota del editor: Dhagpo se encuentra en un \u00e1rea protegida a nivel de construcci\u00f3n), ya que la apariencia exterior del pabell\u00f3n ten\u00eda que ser perigurdina, es decir, t\u00edpica de esta zona. Mi deseo era que la arquitectura del interior evocara Asia, los or\u00edgenes del budismo. En Asia, las construcciones se construyen apilando. En lugar de reunir las piezas en el mismo plano, como hacemos en Occidente, en Oriente, las capas se apilan unas encima de la otras. Esto es lo que hemos intentado conservar en esta estructura: crear varias capas para darle al estilo un toque m\u00e1s asi\u00e1tico.<\/p>

La tradici\u00f3n es celebrar el final del levantamiento de la estructura. El techador, que luego interviene, lo corta, pero deja la vara con el clavo, es la tradici\u00f3n. Personalmente, no es realmente el lado tradicional lo que me habla en este acto, es m\u00e1s la idea de celebrar, de ritualizar, un momento de fin. Es un momento para compartir con todos los presentes.
