With less than two months remaining prior to the consecration of the stupa<\/a> that will house a part of Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche’s relics, we are busying ourselves all over to prepare the substances that will fill the stupa. Among these, there are thousands of mantra rolls created in workshops set up at Dhagpo, Kundreul Ling, as well as numerous\u00a0Dhagpos, urban centers<\/a>)\u00a0(1)<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n

Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche defined a mantra (a Sanskrit word) as a \u201cseries of sounds or syllables intended for recitation, that embodies the nature of a meditation deity.\u201d(2)<\/a><\/em>. Suffice to say that there exist innumerable types depending on whether the mantras are associated with one or another meditation deity (yidam, in Tibetan) and according to the type of activity of the deity in question (peaceful, wrathful, etc.)<\/p>\n

The stupa will contain the mantras of various deities as well as some connected to lamas.\u00a0(3)<\/a><\/em>\u00a0The mantras are printed on scrolls of different sizes: thirty centimeters for the largest and two centimeters for the smallest (which will be enclosed within the tsa-tsas), along with an intermediate format of fifteen centimers. They will be placed in the heart of each part of the stupa (as a reminder: the base, the middle level [the steps], the vase or bumpa [the bell-shaped part] and the thirteen upper rings). As we may remember, the scrolls containing the mantras of Dorje Sempa and those of interdependence will be placed all throughout the monument as a form of correction for any mistakes made during the installation of the substances!<\/p>\n

The creation of a mantra roll requires dexterity and vigilance throughout the various steps. But what are they?<\/p>\n

First, we print the mantras in red ink on yellow paper. Traditionally, of course, \u201cprinting\u201d never entered the equation; one painted the paper with saffron water, which was a mark of preciousness and also promised an exercise in patience (as one then had to wait for the pages to dry!). In the modern day, we can leave out this step by printing on yellow-gold paper.<\/p>\n

When the sheets of mantras are ready, we glue them from end to end and then rolls them up with the text on the inside. A stick of incense serves to begin the roll and thus marks its center once completed. We takes care to tightly roll the sheets and make sure their edges are aligned\u2014for this, we often use a small wooden plank to tap the top of the roll. The largest rolls have a diameter of ten or fifteen centimeters.<\/p>\n

Once we have formed the roll, the text is no longer visible and it is necessary to be able to distinguish the top from the bottom; therefore, we paint the top of the roll red at this time. It is also essential to be able to identify which mantra the roll contains; we stick a label on top of the roll for this purpose.<\/p>\n

These are steps participants in the mantra roll creation workshops followed, somewhere between seriousness and relaxation. For this is not an ordinary activity but a practice in an of itself. For example, it is the occasion to murmur mantras or to reflect on the Buddha’s teaching and, why not, to share one’s understanding with others. Beyond the creation of the rolls, the workshops were a meeting place for participants of all ages and sometimes an opportunity to discover an as-yet unknown place for some among them. In this way, each individual was able to connect to the beautiful project that is the construction of Dhagpo’s new stupa.<\/p>\n

At the conclusion of this new chapter of the adventure, one thousand large rolls and one thousand small rolls had been created by the many volunteers. They are currently being stored in Dhagpo’s library stacks awaiting the fast-approaching moment when they can carry out their work within the stupa.<\/p>\n

\u00c0 moins de deux mois de la cons\u00e9cration du stoupa<\/a> qui accueillera une partie des reliques de Kunzig Shamar Rinpoch\u00e9, on s\u2019active un peu partout pour pr\u00e9parer les substances qui y seront install\u00e9es. Parmi celles-ci, des milliers de rouleaux de mantras dont la fabrication a pris place sous forme d\u2019ateliers \u00e0 Dhagpo, \u00e0 Kundreul Ling, mais aussi dans de nombreux KTT (1)<\/em>.<\/p>

Kunzig Shamar Rinpoch\u00e9 d\u00e9finit le mantra (mot sanskrit) comme une \u00ab\u00a0s\u00e9rie de sons ou de syllabes destin\u00e9e \u00e0 \u00eatre r\u00e9cit\u00e9e, qui incarne la nature de la divinit\u00e9 de m\u00e9ditation\u00a0\u00bb (2)<\/em>. Autant dire qu\u2019il en existe d\u2019innombrables sortes selon que les mantras sont associ\u00e9s \u00e0 telle ou telle divinit\u00e9 de m\u00e9ditation (yidam<\/em>, en tib\u00e9tain) et en fonction du type d\u2019activit\u00e9 de cette derni\u00e8re (paisible, courrouc\u00e9e, etc.).<\/p>

Le stoupa contiendra les mantras de diverses divinit\u00e9s, mais aussi certains relatifs aux lamas (3)<\/em>. Les rouleaux sur lesquels sont imprim\u00e9s ces mantras sont de diff\u00e9rentes tailles : de 30 centim\u00e8tres pour les plus grands \u00e0 2 centim\u00e8tres pour les plus petits (destin\u00e9s \u00e0 \u00eatre enferm\u00e9s dans des tsa-tsas)<\/em>, compl\u00e9t\u00e9s par un format interm\u00e9diaire de 15 centim\u00e8tres. Ils seront d\u00e9pos\u00e9s au c\u0153ur de chacun des \u00e9l\u00e9ments du stoupa\u00a0(pour rappel\u00a0: la base, le niveau m\u00e9dian [les marches], le vase ou bumpa<\/em> [partie campaniforme] et les treize anneaux sup\u00e9rieurs). Souvenons-nous que les rouleaux comportant les mantras de Dorj\u00e9 Sempa ou de l\u2019interd\u00e9pendance seront, quant \u00e0 eux, dispos\u00e9s partout dans le monument en guise de correction des \u00e9ventuelles erreurs commises au moment de l\u2019installation des substances\u00a0!<\/p>

La fabrication d\u2019un rouleau de mantras requiert dext\u00e9rit\u00e9 et vigilance au fil de ses diff\u00e9rentes \u00e9tapes. Mais quelles sont-elles\u00a0?<\/p>

Tout d\u2019abord, on imprime les mantras \u00e0 l\u2019encre rouge sur du papier jaune. Bien s\u00fbr, traditionnellement, il n\u2019\u00e9tait pas question d\u2019\u00ab\u00a0imprimer\u00a0\u00bb ; on safranait le papier, ce qui \u00e9tait un gage de pr\u00e9ciosit\u00e9 autant que la promesse d\u2019un exercice de patience (car il fallait attendre qu\u2019il s\u00e8che\u00a0!). De nos jours, cette \u00e9tape peut \u00eatre \u00e9vit\u00e9e gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l\u2019impression sur du papier d\u00e9j\u00e0 jaune-dor\u00e9.<\/p>

Quand les feuilles de mantras sont pr\u00eates, on les colle les unes \u00e0 la suite des autres et on les enroule, texte vers l\u2019int\u00e9rieur. C\u2019est un b\u00e2ton d\u2019encens qui marque le point de d\u00e9part et donc le centre du rouleau. On prend garde \u00e0 ce que les feuilles soient tr\u00e8s serr\u00e9es et surtout bien align\u00e9es \u2013 pour cela, on n\u2019h\u00e9site pas \u00e0 tapoter le haut du rouleau \u00e0 l\u2019aide d\u2019une planche de bois. Les plus gros rouleaux ont entre 10 et 15 centim\u00e8tres de diam\u00e8tre.<\/p>

Une fois le rouleau form\u00e9, il n\u2019est plus lisible et il devient n\u00e9cessaire de pouvoir diff\u00e9rencier le haut du bas\u00a0; c\u2019est pourquoi son bord sup\u00e9rieur est peint en rouge \u00e0 ce moment-l\u00e0. Il est \u00e9galement indispensable d\u2019identifier le mantra dont il est question\u00a0: une \u00e9tiquette est coll\u00e9e \u00e0 cet effet sur le dessus du rouleau.<\/p>

Enfin, pour parer le rouleau de ses plus beaux atours, on l\u2019habille d\u2019un tissu jaune (la couleur n\u2019est \u00e9videmment pas anodine\u00a0: on peut deviner ici la r\u00e9f\u00e9rence aux robes du Bouddha et du sangha) qui ne recouvre cependant pas le dessus ni le dessous, puis on l\u2019entoure de fils de laine des cinq couleurs repr\u00e9sentant les cinq sagesses \u00e9veill\u00e9es (vert, jaune, bleu, rouge et blanc).<\/p>

Ce sont donc ces \u00e9tapes que les participants aux ateliers de fabrication de rouleaux de mantras ont d\u00fb suivre, \u00e0 mi-chemin entre s\u00e9rieux et d\u00e9tente. Car il n\u2019est pas question ici d\u2019une activit\u00e9 ordinaire mais d\u2019une pratique \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re. C\u2019est, par exemple, l\u2019occasion de murmurer des mantras, ou encore de r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00e0 l\u2019enseignement du Bouddha et, pourquoi pas, d\u2019en partager sa compr\u00e9hension avec les autres. Au-del\u00e0 de la fabrication des rouleaux, les ateliers ont \u00e9t\u00e9 un point de rencontre entre participants de tous \u00e2ges et, parfois, le point de d\u00e9part de la d\u00e9couverte d\u2019un lieu encore inconnu pour certains d\u2019entre eux. Chacun a pu ainsi s\u2019associer \u00e0 ce beau projet qu\u2019est la construction du nouveau stoupa de Dhagpo.<\/p>

Au terme de ce nouveau chapitre de l\u2019aventure, ce sont 1000 grands rouleaux et 1000 petits qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 confectionn\u00e9s par tous. Ils sont \u00e0 pr\u00e9sent stock\u00e9s dans le fonds documentaire de la biblioth\u00e8que de Dhagpo, attendant le moment \u2013 proche \u2013 o\u00f9 ils pourront accomplir leur \u0153uvre au sein du stoupa.<\/p>

Il reste en effet de nombreux rouleaux \u00e0 fabriquer, que ce soit pour les statues du grand temple du Bost ou pour celle du petit temple de Dhagpo que lama Jigm\u00e9 Rinpoch\u00e9 a r\u00e9cemment command\u00e9e. Ces retraites font alterner sessions de pratique et activit\u00e9 au sein de ces ateliers.
